What's new in Umbraco 11

Umbraco 11 was released on December 1, 2022. This latest major version of the Umbraco CMS promises even better performance and an even better developer experience. We tell you what's new.

Resumé

Migration to .NET 7

First of all, Umbraco is migrating from .NET 6 to .NET 7. This means that Umbraco 11 runs on the latest version of Microsoft .NET technology and on the most recent version of the C# programming language. Thanks to the migration to .NET 7 and ASP.NET Core 7 and C# 11, Umbraco 11 has even better performance and both developers and users can enjoy the latest functionalities of the CMS.

Block Grid Editor: Play with blocks

The brand new Block Grid Editor in Umbraco 11 replaces the popular Grid Layouts Editor and Nested Content. Many of the functions and options that made the previous editors so popular are reflected in the new editor. The difference is that the Block Grid Editor, instead of grids, uses blocks as building blocks. Blocks have more layout options, more depth and more flexibility compared to grids. The Block Grid Editor therefore offers new ways to structure content. The interface is smooth and the configuration is better. Moreover, it is a future-proof technology. Building a website in Umbraco 11 is like playing with blocks. What more could a developer want!?

Improved TinyMCE

Umbraco 11 includes an improved version of TinyMCE. This software controls the Rich Text Editor in the back office of the Umbraco CMS. TinyMCE converts HTML elements and displays them to content editors in a user-friendly and understandable way.

U11 less dependent on ImageSharp

To manipulate images (think cropping and optimizing), Umbraco relies on ImageSharp, the cross-platform, two-dimensional graphics library for .NET. With the arrival of Umbraco 11, this dependency has been shifted and therefore greatly reduced. ImageSharp will now be sent as a package with Umbraco, making it possible from Umbraco 11 to upgrade to future major versions of ImageSharp independently of the Umbraco version. Nice progress!

Marketplace for Umbraco packages

In Umbraco 11, the packages section has been changed into a clear marketplace. At a glance you can see with which packages you can expand Umbraco and which third-party services you can integrate. The new Umbraco Marketplace environment shows an up-to-date overview of all available Umbraco 8+ packages, as well as integrations and profiles for the Umbraco Tech Partner network. For older versions of Umbraco, the well-known package list remains.
